The picture on the cover of Kraftwerk’s Aerodynamik shows how to ride in a crosswind, creating the situation for maximum drafting.
Flat plains are often paired with strong winds. It has not stopped countries like Belgium from producing the best cyclists. What riders do, is they form in an échelon, like in the picture above. The riders will take turns being the leader. The cyclists in the middle have the easiest riding. The person who is the most ahead (on the right) works 30% harder than the rest. After a while, the rider in the back (on the left) will drop behind*, and then shift to the right, taking leader’s position. Meanwhile, the rest of the group will shift one position down, to the left. It’s a circular motion.
If a rider would attempt to attack alone in a strong wind, he would be demolished very quickly. But the riders in an échelon are not necessarily members of the same team. They could be competitors, but for that moment they become comrades to battle the wind together.
* - The shifting motion could vary according to what kind of side wind it is: 45° headwind like in the picture, direct side wind or tailwind. Straight headwind or tailwind does not require forming an échelon, it’s a crosswind tactic only.
